Appointment of Members to LOGSCOUNCIL

The Government announced today (11 December) the formation of Hong Kong Logistics Development Council (LOGSCOUNCIL), another step in taking forward the "Logistics Hong Kong" initiative as announced in this year's Policy Address, which states "With Hong Kong's excellent transportation facilities and the PRD's high productivity, together we can develop into a logistics hub to link the Mainland with the world. We can promote the development of an inter-modal system and consider other supporting facilities to speed up the flow of goods and information. The provision of integrated services will also strengthen Hong Kong's competitive advantages as a supply-chain base."

To support this initiative, the Chief Executive also stated government's plans to set up two new institutions.

The Steering Committee on Logistics Development (LOGSCOM), which has been established to spearhead the programme and to accelerate the development of "Logistics Hong Kong", has already held its first meeting in November 2001.

The LOGSCOUNCIL, which is the second new institution set up to support the "Logistics Hong Kong" initiative, is a committee appointed by the Financial Secretary and chaired by Secretary for Economic Services. It has a symbiotic relationship with the LOGSCOM. Specifically, LOGSCOUNCIL will implement directives from the LOGSCOM and provide a forum for the public and private sectors to discuss and coordinate matters concerning "Logistics Hong Kong". It will also carry out joint projects (between public and private sectors) for "Logistics Hong Kong".

The LOGSCOUNCIL is made up of 39 members, including 5 officials. They are :-
