Speech by the Secretary for Economic Development and Labour,
Mr Stephen IP,
at the 100 Millionth Container Celebration Party of Hong Kong International Terminals Limited

21 September, 2006

John, Eric, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,

I am glad to be here this evening to celebrate the 100 millionth container handled by the Hongkong International Terminals Limited (HIT).

Three decades ago, HIT began operating its first dedicated container terminal in Kwai Chung. Since then it has evolved to become not only the biggest operator in Hong Kong, but also the world's leading port developer, Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH). Today, HPH operates over 250 berths in 43 ports along with a number of transportation related services companies. HIT has been playing an important role in the development of our port and is, indeed, a success story of Hong Kong.

To stay ahead in this highly competitive business environment, HIT has always tried to implement innovative ideas to enhance its productivity, and has invested heavily in developing technological solutions. Its efforts were recognised as HIT was the Technology Innovation Award Winner of the Logistics Awards Hong Kong 2005.

A new challenge, and a new opportunity, for HIT, as well as other terminal operators, is the arrival of the Super Post-Panamax container ships with a payload of up to 13 500 TEUs. In a few years' time, many of these giants will add to the fleet of our regular visitors. We understand that HIT is well prepared to embrace the opportunity by getting ready the required Super Post-Panamax quay cranes, more deep-water berths, and so on. This is in line with the Government's commitment to strengthen Hong Kong's position as a regional hub.

In the 11th Five-year Plan, the Central Government affirmed Hong Kong's strategic position and supported Hong Kong's status as an international shipping and maritime centre. Hong Kong's unique advantages as a regional economic, logistics and maritime centre is part of the strategic development in South China. I hope Hong Kong, HIT and other port operators will continue to strive for better quality service and capitalise on the tremendous growth potential of the Pearl River Delta region under the 11th Five-year Plan.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I would like to congratulate HIT on its achievement, and look forward to the continuous close cooperation between the Government, HIT and the port, maritime and logistics industries.

Thank you.
